The Michigan State University online Master of Public Health degree program (MPH) earns accreditation by signifying the highest standards of achievement and a commitment to quality education. The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) review team, composed of elected deans and directors, approved MSU’s accreditation at the CEPH Board of Councilors meeting on June 1 – 3, 2022. Accreditation begins from June 15, 2019, through July 1, 2027.
“We are pleased to be included among a select group of accredited public health programs,” Division of Public Health Interim Director Wayne R. McCullough, PhD, said. “Having met or exceeded all 35 CEPH accreditation criteria sets a high bar for the program. We are very proud of this accomplishment and strive to deliver world-class education and experience that helps advance the careers of our Spartans in Public Health.”
The College of Human Medicine enrolled its first MPH students in 2008 to address the public health workforce shortage, increase interest in public health careers, and offer a highly applied, accessible, affordable, competency-based MPH degree.
After a three-year continuous improvement review from 2019 to 2022, the Program is 1 of 30 CEPH accredited Online Master of Public Health degrees with a generalist concentration. Faculty have developed and implemented a mission-driven plan centered on advancing the public’s health through practice-infused instruction, research, and community partnerships that promote the attainment of health equity for all citizens.
“Under the direction of Wayne McCullough, the MPH is one of the first online programs in the country, and the degree continues to provide opportunity to people in the state and around the country,” said Aron Sousa, MD, dean, MSU College of Human Medicine. “Accreditation makes the creation of the proposed Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health even more important as we look to expand our efforts in Flint and beyond.”
The achievement of accreditation positions Spartans in Public Health alongside top institutions under a hallmark of education excellence.
To date, the MPH program has graduated over 700 alumni living in and working in 16 states and three countries. Alumni work as health educators, data analysts, research coordinators, health communication specialists, physicians, and more.
